Google Business Profile Optimisation That Actually Moves Your Ranking
A fully optimised Google Business Profile is the foundation of every Google Maps Top 3 ranking. Here’s what optimisation actually means — and what we do to every client profile from Day 1.
What Google Business Profile Optimisation Actually Means
Most business owners think “optimised GBP” means their name and phone number are correct. That’s the bare minimum. A truly optimised profile — the kind that contributes meaningfully to a Top 3 Maps ranking — requires every available field completed with strategic, keyword-aligned content, and maintained actively with regular updates.
Your GBP is the primary document Google reads when deciding whether to show your business to a searcher. The more completely and accurately it describes your business, the stronger the relevance match — and relevance is one of the three core pillars of Maps ranking.
The Complete GBP Optimisation Checklist
Primary category must match your single most important keyword exactly. All relevant secondary categories added. Wrong or missing categories are the #1 GBP optimisation mistake.
Each service gets its own listing with a unique name, description, and price range. Not just “auto repair” — “brake replacement,” “oil change,” “transmission service,” etc. Every service listed becomes a searchable keyword.
Fully utilise the character limit. Include your primary keyword, your city, your key differentiators, and a natural call to action. Stuffing keywords harms — strategic, natural placement wins.
Every relevant attribute selected: accessibility, payment methods, amenities, service options (delivery, dine-in, takeout), identifying attributes (women-owned, veteran-owned). Attributes surface in filtered searches.
A live, functional booking link increases profile conversion rate significantly — especially for after-hours searches when phones aren’t staffed. Required for any appointment-based business.
Minimum 10 photos: exterior, interior, team, work examples, products. Fresh photos uploaded monthly. Photo engagement is a behavioural signal — profiles with more photos receive more profile views and engagement.
Don’t wait for customers to ask questions. Seed your Q&A with the 5–10 most common questions and detailed answers. Include keywords naturally. Google indexes Q&A content for search.
One post per week minimum. Each post includes your city, a service keyword, and a CTA button. An actively posted profile is weighted higher than a static one — freshness is a ranking signal.
Every holiday date set with correct hours. Missing holiday hours displays a warning message that kills click-through rates. Regular hours verified and matching all directories.
URL should point to a location-specific page, not the homepage. If you have multiple locations, each GBP links to its own page. Alignment between GBP and website reinforces both signals.
Your business name, address, and phone number on your GBP must exactly match every directory listing — character for character, including abbreviations. Inconsistencies suppress ranking.
Retail businesses, salons, and service businesses with clear offerings should complete the Products section. Products surface in Maps searches and increase profile engagement.
The biggest mistake local businesses make with GBP optimisation is treating it as a setup task. Google’s algorithm weights freshness — profiles that are actively updated with new posts, new photos, new services, and seasonal updates consistently outperform identical but static profiles. Our campaigns include ongoing GBP management throughout, not just an initial setup.
What Happens After GBP Is Optimised
GBP optimisation is Signal #1 in the 8-signal ranking system — but it works in combination with all other signals. A perfectly optimised GBP with weak citations, no reviews, and no behavioural signals will plateau well below Top 3 in competitive markets. That’s why our GBP work is always combined with the full Map Dominance Engine™ campaign.
